White Plains is the Westchester County seat and has 13 residential neighborhoods radiating out from its downtown hub. Each day, the population soars to 250,000 as workers, shoppers and visitors arrive.
White Plains welcomes big business such as Heineken, Disney, IBM, and Bloomingdale's, plus there are more than 1,000 retail establishments ranging from select boutiques to large indoor malls. The Westchester, an enormous plaza with statues, fountains and palm trees, houses some 150 fine stores, including Neiman Marcus and Tiffany. The Galleria, though not as opulent, has two department stores, 150 specialty shops and restaurants. Shoppers can also browse at City Center, a residential entertainment-shopping complex with popular chains and a 15-theater multiplex. Ethnic eateries, fast food favorites and fine restaurants dot the city. Lively entertainment like the Miss Westchester Pageant can be found at the 420 seat White Plains Performing Arts Center, and the 3,000 seat County Center presents events ranging from basketball games to lectures, concerts and trade shows.
A recent building boom brought fresh residents to two new skyscrapers in City Place and other luxury high rises.
Well maintained roads are easy to navigate, and there's a robust city transit system. Westchester County Airport is also located here. Small parks dot the urban and suburban landscape.
With a revitalized downtown district, low taxes, top-notch entertainment, nightlife and dining, multi-cultural White Plains has all the benefits of a big city while keeping its small city appeal.
